A key component of monitoring operations on a dairy farm is data analysis and interpretation.

The information from your Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD can be transferred to your personal computer or laptop using a flash card memory or Bluetooth™ wireless connection.

Converted to the graphical or data form , the information from the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD can be used by dairy farmers, extension, field representatives and inspectors to review farm operations and quality of the raw the milk.

The Dairy Cheq® Control Centre software provides an easy-to-use graphical picture of the dairy farm’s operating parameters as measured by the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD.  The software allows for value-added review and interpretation allowing the user to make better, faster management decisions for raw milk quality.  The Control Centre software highlights alarms and warnings documented by Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD.

Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD Options

The Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard products can also monitor more than just the basic operations on the dairy farm.  With additional sensors, the scope of monitoring and reporting to you can be increased significantly.

Both the Dairy Cheq® Basic MilkGuard and the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD are equiped with the ability to add additional sensors to the sensors that are not part of the standard kit.

Conductivity

An important process in producing high quality raw milk is the process of cleaning the milking systems using clean in place procedures.

During the clean in place process, the use of detergents can improve the effectiveness of the cleaning process.

Dairy farmers can use the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD conductivity sensors to provide management information on the concentration of detergent in the washing processes. Using these sensors can help the dairy farmer determine if the detergents are running out or not being added to the clean in place process at all.

Bluetooth™ Wireless Connections

On many dairy farms, the milk house where the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD is usually installed is some distance from the personal computer used for dairy farm management systems.

Dairy farmers may purchase the Bluetooth™ connection devices to transfer the data stored in the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard to their personal computers for use with the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard software, simply and easily.

Class II Bluetooth™: Maximum range of 10 meters/30 feet*
Class I Bluetooth™: Maximum range of 100 meters/300 feet*

*Maximum range is for open air or clear path applications. Walls or obstructions will likely reduce this distance.
*Requires the same class of Bluetooth™ to be used on the personal computer to achieve these distances.

FOR EXTENSION, FIELD REPRESENTATIVE AND INSPECTION SERVICES:
Obtain data from Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards of your clients seamlessly without having to physically adjust the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD.  If your clients install the Bluetooth™ option, the process of compiling and reviewing performance data becomes more efficient.

Additional alarm lights

The Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards provides real time, immediate feedback on raw milk conditions.  When a dairy farmer or their staff are busy with farm operations, sometimes the audible alarms can be missed.

Dairy Cheq® recommends installing additional alarm lights in the dairy facility to ensure all staff are aware of the possible alarm conditions the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD has identified.

MilkGuard FD

How does it work?

Low temperature for pipeline cleaning

This alarm occurred following a pipe cleaning that was not hot enough. The pipeline wash had a maximum temperature of 39.2°C (103°F).  The target wash temperature of 40°C (104°F) for 4 minutes was not met, so the alarm occurred.

Possible Causes of the Low Temperature Pipecleaning Alarm may be:

  • Water heater is starting to fail
  • Pipe wash not started
  • Wash valves not in proper position
  • Pre cooler still running during the wash
  • Plugged screen in wash circulation loop
  • Not enough water volume to maintain temperature
  • Mixing valve adding cold water during hot cycle
  • Faulty check valve

Milk Too Warm

If the milk is not cooled within the required time (or regional requirement), then a “Regulatory” or rule-based condition has been breached.

The Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD will give the dairy farmer a warning 10 minutes after milking if cooling is not sufficient to meet the regulation.  If the milk is not cooled to below 5°C (Canada) or 45°F (US) quickly enough, then a “Regulatory” alarm will occur.

Possible Causes of the Slow Cooling Alarm may be:

  • Not enough cooling capacity
  • Failed compressor
  • Cooling efficiency is gradually degrading
  • Radiator needs to be cleaned
  • Leak in freon line
  • Thermostat has failed
  • Thermostat is not set to proper temperature

Switch on Cooler

If the milk cooling equipment is not turned on for the first milking, an alarm will occur.

The Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD looks for a temperature drop to detect cooling.

Possible Causes of the Switch on Cooler warning may be:

  • Forgot to switch on cooler
  • Failed compressor
  • Freon leak in cooling lines

Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards

Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards are a family of products called time and temperature recorders.  Our products monitor critical processes of how raw milk is managed over time, paying attention to among other things, the temperature of the raw milk in real time. But way beyond monitoring, Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards operate like your Assistant Manager on the farm, alerting you to problems BEFORE they happen - no other time and temperature recorder can do that.

Milk Quality Farm Assessment

Dairy Cheq® can perform a Milk Quality Farm Assessment.  This Assessment is included with some Dairy Cheq® Service Programs – check for availability in your area:

With the purchase of each Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD, dairy farmers will receive two on-farm milk quality assessments. The first is conducted prior to installation of the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard FD, and the second is conducted 8-12 months after installation. The purpose of the Milk Quality Farm Assessment is to examine milk quality history, procedures, milking equipment, herd mastitis history, housing environment and other on-farm factors that can contribute to lower milk quality. The result of the assessment is individualized reports/guides to help producers further improve bulk tank raw milk quality.

Contract Installations

Dairy Cheq® has performed contract installations in the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec.  Both of these jurisdictions entered into a contract with Dairy Cheq® to not only purchase Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards on behalf of their members, but to have Dairy Cheq® install those Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards throughout their provinces on an orderly basis according to a pre-determined schedule over multiple years.

Dairy Cheq® has the capability of performing multi-year installation contracts in any jurisdiction.

A contract installation program is the best way to install Dairy Cheq® MilkGuards on many dairy farms.

Our contract installations include:

  • Labour, by trained Dairy Cheq® installation technicians
  • Installation materials
  • Specialized installation materials and equipment such as PCIP BOOTS and stud welders.
  • Communication with individual dairy farms before their installation and on the imminent installation of their Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard
  • A training session by our technicians for the dairy farmer on the operation of the Dairy Cheq® MilkGuard
  • Training sessions for extension, field representatives and inspection personnel
  • Training sessions for local stakeholders such as milk transportation personnel and service personnel of local dairy equipment dealers.
  • Installations according to local regulations and guidelines.
Canadian Quality Milk (CQM) - Dairy Cheq
Canadian Quality Milk (CQM)

Canadian Quality Milk (CQM)

Consumer expectations of the quality of the dairy products they purchase are increasing. In response, the dairy industry is continually evaluating its processes to create best management practices and quality standards. The CQM program uses the HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) approach. HACCP is a science-based, preventative approach to food safety that focuses on preventing and minimizing the risk of food safety hazards. Canadian Quality Milk program is an on-farm food safety program designed to help producers prevent, monitor and reduce food safety risks on their farms.  The program was developed by the Dairy Farmers of Canada and is recognized by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

As part of the CQM program, producers must record actions they have taken to rectify problems associated with:

  • Milking treated animals
  • Cooling & storage of milk
  • Shipping animals
  • Medicines and chemicals used on livestock
  • Facility and equipment sanitation
  • Use of water for cleaning milk contact surfaces

The information that must be recorded should include the date that the problem occurred, description of the problem and the corrective action taken to fix the problem.

The CQM Deviation and Corrective Action Record prints the date, time, alarm history and notes in a chart format.
